O’Fallon’s National Volunteer Blood Donor Month Blood Drive

January is Volunteer Blood Donor Month, a time when blood supplies are typically low but the need is high due to holiday travel and winter weather hazards. Healthy adults are encouraged to help replenish local blood supplies by donating blood on Friday, January 15, noon - 4 p.m., at the O’Fallon Municipal Centre (City Hall), 100 North Main Street, O’Fallon, Missouri 63366. The collection is sponsored by the City of O’Fallon and Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center, and donations will be used in local hospitals.

“This year, make a New Year’s resolution to benefit others by becoming a volunteer blood donor,” said Kathy Halstead, O’Fallon’s Manager of Volunteer Services. “A single whole-blood donation can help save the lives of up to three people. And platelet or double-red blood cell donations are especially important to cancer and surgical patients, and people with chronic blood disorders.”

“Walk-ins for whole blood donations are always welcome, but appointments may minimize waiting time,” said Halsted. “Additionally, donors who pre-register for platelets and double-red cell donations will have a spot reserved for them in the pheresis donation area, which allows donors to comfortably give two to five times as many blood components as whole blood donations.”

Donors must show a photo I.D. and are encouraged to eat a good meal within four hours prior to donating. Refreshments will be served immediately after donations.

O’Fallon joins “Get A Disney Day” volunteering program

With family volunteering in mind, the City of O’Fallon’s Volunteer Services Department announced its participation in a new program, “Give a Day. Get a Disney Day.”

“We’re excited that the City of O’Fallon’s Volunteer Services Department has been approved to participate,” said Kathy Halstead, Manager of Volunteer Services. “We have always welcomed families and friends volunteering together. The City offers a number of interesting opportunities to people of all ages, and we’re pleased that the Disney program puts the focus on volunteering, family and fun. For any of our volunteers who are planning a trip to Florida or California in 2010, the free Disney tickets can certainly help make a family vacation more affordable.”

The “Give a Day. Get a Disney Day.” program invites people who are at least 18 to register for volunteering in participating communities, including O’Fallon, by signing up at www.disneyparks.com. Additional information is available on the website. Registration officially opens on Friday, January 1, 2010. When the volunteer service is completed and then verified by the HandsOn Network and the City of O’Fallon, participants will receive a voucher that can be redeemed for a free ticket good for a one-day admission to a Walt Disney World or a Disneyand theme park ticket.

“O’Fallon’s 2010 volunteering opportunities start in January with our Volunteer Donor Month Blood Drive and the King Day of Service, and continue throughout the year,” said Halstead. “We have a list of over 60 programs for families, individuals and organizations, and many programs that can use helping hands of all ages and abilities.”

City of O’Fallon changes animal impoundment site

The City of O’Fallon has changed the shelter site for stray animals picked up by the O’Fallon Police Department’s Animal Control. Animals are now held at the Dardenne Animal Medical Center and Shelter, 1092 Callahan Road in Wentzville, Missouri 63385.

Claiming an impounded pet is a two-part process. First, owners must get an impoundment release from the O’Fallon Police Records Department and pay the applicable fines. Otherwise, the animal shelter cannot release the pet. The Records Department is located in the Police Department at O’Fallon Municipal Centre, 100 North Main Street, O’Fallon 63366. Office hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday.

First offense – $20.00
Second offense – $40.00
Third offense – $60.00

Next, the owner must bring the O’Fallon Police Department release to the Dardenne Animal Medical Center during regular business hours:

Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Tuesday, 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Friday, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Saturday, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Sunday – CLOSED

In addition, owners must:
Pay the shelter the applicable daily shelter boarding fees
Show proof of current rabies vaccination or pay to have the animal vaccinated
Obtain a current St. Charles County pet license, if needed
Pay the applicable shelter fee to have a microchip ID inserted in the animal if it doesn’t already have one

O’Fallon’s easy knitting and needle-tatting classes

Wintertime is a great time for learning or refreshing knitting or needle tatting skills through the City of O’Fallon’s Parks and Recreation programs.

Beginning Knitting – Refresh knitting skills or learn how to knit from scratch in this two-session class, which will be held at the Renaud Spirit Center from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, starting February 10.

Progress at your own speed in learning skills such as casting-on, knit stitch, purl stitch, and binding-off, and get tips and valuable pointers for knitting a dishcloth or washcloth. Bring one pair of size 10 knitting needles and one skein of 100% cotton yard to class. The cost is $20 for O’Fallon residents and $25 for non-residents. Please register by February 3 for this program.

Needle Tatting Extravaganza – This relaxing Chinese art was once restricted to royalty, but today, anyone can use it to embellish and update fashions and decor. Learn all you need to know in two easy classes, which will be held at the Renaud Spirit Center from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning February 24. The cost is $20 for O’Fallon residents and $25 for non-residents. Registration for this program ends February 17.

O’Fallon’s recreational dance classes

This February, shake off the wintertime “blahs” with O’Fallon’s recreational dance classes for adults.

Tap Dance – Got rhythm? Tap dancing is so much fun, it hardly seems like exercise! Class meets on Mondays for six weeks in the Renaud Spirit Center from 6:45 – 7:30 p.m., beginning February 22. Cost is $33 for O’Fallon residents and $38 for non-residents.

Belly Dancing – Learn the ancient art and fun of belly dancing in this six-week class with professional dancer Juliana Garwood, including hip lifts and drops, hip circles, figure eights, pushes and snaps, arm movements and traveling steps. Belly dancing improves coordination, flexibility and muscle tone, too. Class meets on Mondays and Wednesdays in the Renaud Spirit Center from 7:45 – 8:45 p.m., beginning Monday, February 22. Cost is $43 for O’Fallon residents and $48 for non-residents.

Social Dancing – This six-week class offers great fun for couples, who will learn a new dance each week, including salsa, swing, waltz, cha cha and “couples’ choice.” Beginning February 24, class meets on Wednesdays in Civic Hall from 7:30- 8:30 p.m. Cost is $61 per couple for O’Fallon residents or $66 for non-resident couples.

Enjoy Wii Bowling at the Renaud Spirit Center

Come see “how Wii roll”! Register to watch a Wii Bowling demo, free, from 1 – 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 3, at the Renaud Spirit Center, 2650 Tri Sports Circle, O’Fallon, Missouri 63368.

Wii is the latest sports craze. Players don’t need bowling equipment to play, and all skill levels can enjoy the game. Using a remote instead of a bowling ball, Wii players mimic real-life actions, such as rolling a bowling ball, to direct a character on a video screen. Players can even give the ball some spin. Scores are tallied in much the same way as standard bowling.

Beginning March 3, leagues will play from 1 – 3 p.m. on Wednesdays. League registration closes February 17. Cost for individuals is $15 for residents or $20 for non-residents. Team registration for a team of four costs $50 for O’Fallon residents or $55 for non-residents.
